We’ve got more new disc reviews for you to close out the week here at The Bits, including…

Stephen’s reviews of Rango Lam’s City on Fire (1987) and John Woo’s The Killer (1989) in 4K Ultra HD from Imprint.

Stuart’s thoughts on John Guillermin’s House of Cards (1968) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics, the Spencer Tracy Collection on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive Collection—which includes Bad Day on Black Rock (1955), Fury (1936), Libeled Lady (1936), and Northwest Passage (1941)—and the Directed by David Lean: Volume II box set on Blu-ray from Imprint—which includes The Passionate Friends (1949), Madeleine (1950), The Sound Barrier (1952), Hobson’s Choice (1954), and Summertime (1955).

Tim’s look at Tobe Hooper’s Salem’s Lot (1979) in 4K Ultra HD from our friends at Arrow Video.

And Dennis’ take on Brian Levant’s Beethoven (1992) on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

More reviews are in the works for release here all next week, so be sure to keep checking back for them.

Now then… the first thing to be said today is that Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Project Hail Mary (2026) is now available for pre-order on Amazon.com in Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K Ultra HD (click here for the link). This is an Amazon MGM Studios release. The street date isn’t yet official, but we believe it will be on or about 8/11. Look for the disc to include audio commentary with the directors, deleted scenes, and the Earth’s Favorite Eridian featurette. You can see the cover artwork above left. [Read on here...]

In other announcement news today, Imprint has announced a pair of new Hardbox Limited Editions for release on July 29, including Mario Bava’s Danger: Diabolik (1968) in 4K UHD + Blu-ray and a double feature of Vittorio Cottafavi’s Hercules and the Captive Women (1961) and Mario Bava’s Hercules in the Haunted World (1961) on Blu-ray only.

The company has also announced that the rest of their July 29 slate will include Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Downfall (2004) in 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray, as well as Cate Shortland’s Lore (2012), Wim Wenders’ Don’t Come Knocking (2005), Alice Wu’s Saving Face (2004), and Tom Tykwer’s The Princes and the Warrior (2000).

And the company has announced a pair of animated Blu-ray titles as well for July 29, including Blake & Mortimer: The Complete Collection (1997) and The Adventures of TinTin: The Complete Collection (1991-92). Both will include all episodes in both the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio and also upscaled 1.77:1 widescreen.

Here’s something awesome: Our friends at the Warner Archive Collection have just announced their biggest monthly slate of catalog Blu-ray titles ever for release on July 28, including Michael Curtiz’s The Keyhole (1933), William A. Wellman’s Lilly Turner (1933), Max Reinhardt and William Dieterle’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1935), James W. Horne’s Bonnie Scotland (1935), Anatole Litvak’s The Sisters (1938), Mervyn LeRoy’s Random Harvest (1942), Norman Taurog’s Presenting Lily Mars (1943), Fred Zinnemann’s The Seventh Cross (1944), Edwin L. Marin’s Colt .45 (1950), Raoul Walsh’s Captain Horatio Hornblower (1950), Josef Von Sternberg’s Macao (1952), and Andre de Toth’s Crime Wave (1954)! Virtually all of these are new 4K scans of either best preservation elements or original (sometimes nitrate) camera negatives. What a great slate!

Meanwhile, Paramount (via Alliance Entertainment) has finally set their 4K Ultra HD release of Robert Altman’s Popeye (1980) for release on 8/18. Look for it to include Dolby Vision HDR.

StudioCanal is debuting their new 4K restoration of Michael Mann’s Manhunter: The Final Cut tonight at the Academy Museum’s David Geffen Theater, and it will play more widely in select theaters on 7/24. We expect it to arrive on 4K disc sometime later this year, but whether this will include the original Theatrical Version (or the previous Director’s Cut or the Anchor Bay “Hybrid” Cut) as well is TBA. Meanwhile, the restoration was supervised by Mann in an effort coordinated by L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy. Watch for more details in the coming months.

It appears that there’s a new 4K remaster of Yoshiaki Kawajiri’s animated Ninja Scroll (1993) that has its world premiere at the 76th Annual Berlinale international film festival, so it seems very likely that a 4K disc will follow in the months ahead (perhaps from Sentai here in the States).

Eureka Entertainment has set the Reap the Whirlwind: Four Films with Angela Mao Blu-ray box set for release on 8/24, which includes director Huang Feng’s The Angry River (1971), Stoner (1974), The Tournament (1974), and The Himalayan (1976).

Second Sight Films has announced two great new Limited Edition releases, including Shane Meadows’ Dead Man’s Shoes (2004) on Blu-ray and Jean-Jacques Annaud’s The Name of the Rose (1986) on 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray. Look for them to street on August 10.

In other news, production sources have revealed that HBO will be releasing Hacks: The Complete Series on DVD sometime later this summer (the street date is TBA).

Universal has set JB Rogers’ American Pie 2 (2001) and Paul Weitz’s Little Fockers (2010) for 4K Ultra HD release on 8/4.

And finally today, with Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day (2026) arriving in theaters this weekend, Universal has just made his Amazing Stories: The Complete Series available for purchase in SD Digital for the first time on all the usual streaming services. It’s not remastered that we can see, but still—it’s nice to see it more widely available to folks who may not have seen it before.

That’s all for now. I hope those of you who head out to see Disclosure Day thoroughly enjoy it (I certainly did—more next week) and have a great weekend!

Stay tuned…
